The Jesus Pages: The Forgotten Man

Matthew 2

They came riding into town with some disturbing news - "There's a new king! We saw it in the skies and we're here to give him our pledge of allegiance." Whoa! That sure messed up some dots for the town and the current king. The Magi got it right and Herod knew something was very wrong.

Angels to the rescue! They got to the Magi before they got to baby Jesus. They came, they worshipped, they were warned, they left without telling Herod what he wanted. The angel warned Joseph - he obeyed and took Jesus to Egypt. That was probably very inconvenient. I mean, didn't Joseph have to get back to work? Didn't he use up all his vacation time? Egypt? Wasn't that a place that didn't treat his ancestors very well?

Did you know that Joseph got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR angel visits and he obeyed everything they asked. No questions, no arguing, no back-talk. He was on the same page as God and was a very worthy, godly father for Jesus. Too bad we overlook him for all the other flashy stuff. He was the guy who did it right day by day. Somehow, we've forgotten that.

Much of life is inconvenient. Even if I had a million dollars (or more), I couldn't guarantee that things would go my way. Bummer! But the key to the Christian life is to be available to go God's way. Afterall, He can see ahead to what the path holds and - by the way - He holds the keys to how that path unwinds. We probably have angels appearing in our lives a lot, but we don't recognize them and then ignore them. Oh, to be more like Joseph (did I really say that?). He was the one who was willing to be inconvenienced for something he could not see but trusted that it would change the world forever.

The Jesus Pages is my journey through the New Testament in one year. I invite you to come along, read the Bible passage and leave comments. (If it's nasty or unrelated, I reserve the right to delete it.)
